Rocco (1998: 543) explains the name based on the Arabic šawka "thorn, prick", rendered in Sicilian as Sagittuni, among whose meanings include "prickly grass, white thorn"; see also Barbera (1940), Maltese-Arabic-Italian Dictionary, vol.
